Director de cine estadounidense-alemán. Actuó en la compañía de teatro alemana de Max Reinhardt (1911–14) como también en cortometrajes cómicos. Luego se dedicó a dirigir películas dramáticas de época que fueron los primeros largometrajes alemanes exhibidos en el extranjero. Entre ellos se cuentan Madame Du Barry (1919), Ana Bolena (1920) y La mujer del faraón (1921). Asimismo dirigió comedias como La muñeca (1919) y La princesa de las ostras (1919). En 1923 se trasladó a Hollywood donde desarrolló un estilo que se caracterizó por un ingenio sofisticado y un uso certero del ritmo narrativo –el famoso "toque Lubitsch– que se expresó en exitosas comedias como Los peligros del flirt (1924), El desfile del amor (1929), Un ladrón en la alcoba (1932), Ninotchka (1939), El bazar de las sorpresas (1940), Ser o no ser (1942) y El diablo dijo no (1943).
